This page discusses and features Tools, Paints, Resources and items of interest in the pursuit of model excellence. Tools are essential in constructing any model especially miniature tools specifically used in modeling. As we become Model Shipwrights our tool collection grows.

****CASES FOR MODEL SHIP DISPLAY****
Finding a way to protect and display our models always seems to be a challenge to say the least. We've spent a lot of time and effort in creating them and need to protect them from dust and damage, as well as creating a display which many times results in a piece of furniture. They need to be displayed to be seen well, but not to the point that the case becomes the the focal point and the model is secondary. Jim Roggero's Clear View Designs in Portsmouth, Rhode Island accomplishes this with his beautiful Custom Made display cases. Each case is designed and built just for your model. Click on the "Buttton" to contact Jim for a price quote and to view his website. I highly recommend his cases, as some of the finest available.

AMATI PRODUCTS
Amati Products are made in Italy. They are available in the US, but essentially difficult to find and they are not cheap. The quality is superb and in my opinion invaluable.
AMATI KEEL VISE (KEEL KLAMPER)
************* ATTENTION***********
As of 5-20-16 I have 2 Amati Keel Klampers available. Email me on the contact page for ordering. I will send a Paypal Invoice and you can pay from there. Both are brand new in the box. One has a corner of the box that Fido decided would taste good, but there is no damage to the vise ($74.95 + shipping). The other one is New in it's undamaged box ($84.94 + shipping) Only available to US shipping addresses not International or Canada.

A very versatle tool which clamps to most tables or workbenches for supporting your work. It rotates, tilts and swivels securely to allow hard to reach places more accessable. There are cheaper imitations on the market, but I highly reccomend using this product. The modeler has much time, money and blood sweat and tears invested in his model and it would be ashame to have something come apart and damage or destroy his masterpiece. This is a case where you get - what - you- pay - for.
AMATI MASTER CUT PLANK CUTTER (CHOPPER)
The Amati Chopper is used for cutting small strips of wood such as those used in planking, decking and building model ships. It is a "miter saw" with a razor blade and provides nice uniform sharp cuts. With a jig repetitive cuts can be made that are the same length. It is faster and more accurate than just cutting with an Xacto Knife.

AMATI WATERLINE MARKER
The Amati Waterline Marker marks an exact line on a level hull evenly around the circumfrence of the ship. Once the hull is leveled and with a clear surface all the way around it, the marker will slide on the worksurface to mark a waterline. Excellent tool. Used with a #2 or softer sharp pencil.

Sanding
This is one of the handiest accessories I have. It is convenient, very strong (cloth backed) progressive sanding holder. It's always around the workbench, and easily accessable. You can even wet sand with it, which comes in handy.

PROXXON PS-13 PENSANDER & 12V POWER SUPPLIES
The PROXXON PS-13 PENSANDER is one of those tools you wonder how you ever did without. It is a small reciprocating sander that gets where nothing else can. Small points, difficult accesses, nooks and crannies....you name it...it'll get there. In wood ship modeling there is always places you can't get to so this is what will. This comes with 8 shapes and various grades of stick on sandpaper. It uses 12v power, so a power transformer is required and is seperate. There are 2 different power supplys, one for a single tool or a heavy duty one for multiple 12v Proxxon tools. Either will work well but I have the heavy duty one because it has a variable speed power control. See Specifications below. Everyone needs one of these.

SPECIFICATIONS:
This superfine sander with linear sanding motion (versus rotary or orbital) operates at 8,000 strokes per minute with a 3/32" (2.5mm) stroke. It is ideal for surfaces, slots and tight corners. Included are four sanding attachments with straight shanks and 4 with angled shanks (four different shapes per shank style) as well as 3 sheets of preprofiled adhesive sanding pads. The sheets are 180, 240 and 400 grit with 5 of each shape per sheet.
An AC adapter of at least 12 – 18V DC and 1.0A is required. We recommend PROXXON power supplies NG 2/S or NG 5/E. The electronic speed control on the NG 5/E unit allows the selection of different speeds for different applications and materials.

PROXXON COMBO DRILL PRESS "MAKESHIFT" MILL MACHINE
This Drill Press/Mill is a combination tool that I assembled from a Micro-Mark Drill Press head, and a Proxxon tool base. I already had the drill press, but it wouldn't accomodate the compound table. This is a "poor boy's" mill. By attaching to the Proxxon Base, it gives the foundation for attaching a Proxxon Micro Compound Table and a Machine Vise MF 4 to form a Milling Table. The Micro-Mark Drill Press was originally made for them by Proxxon, so everything fits properly. This makes an ideal mill where exact precision is not necessary as with making some model ship parts, as it does not have the "z" axis controls. If "z" axis control is needed then I reccomend the MF-70 Proxxon Mill. It is an excellent tool for precise milling of soft materials, and is reasonably priced. I use the 1.0 mm,2.0 mm and 3.0 mm, double flute Mill Cutters for most of the work needed. I have not tried milling metal with this, but it very possibly could work just fine. The last picture shows the acccessories used with this set up. The Proxxon Rohm Chuck, Proxxon Collet Set and the Proxxon Step Clamps. The same setup can be achieved using the Proxxon Drill Press PBM 15.

This is the newest addition to my workbench, and I'm not sure why it took me so long to get one, as I can thaink of hundreds of times it could have been used. It is the Proxxon Precision Vise FMZ and it is small and very strong. It rotates and has rubberized jaw pads (removable) for fragile items and when removed provides strong steel jaws with 2 vertical notched areas for holding dowels or tubing in a vertical position, and 1 notched horizontal area for horizontal holding of dowels and tubing. I'm using the horizontal groove in the above picture.
PROXXON: MUCH MORE TO FOLLOW HERE AS THIS PAGE IS BUILDING DAILY. We offer the entire Proxxon LIne of Products here through The "Ship's Store" Page.
TUNGSTEN CARBIDE DRAW PLATE
This Drawplate is the absolute best one I've ever used. Ships such as the Morgan require many small diameter dowels to use making the oars, harpoons, lances, masts, gaffs and booms for the 7 whaleboats aboard the ship. In order to achieve this it is necessary to use a Drawplate and pull or "draw" the dowel through progressively smaller holes shaving off the dowel to a smaller size, then repeat the process through the next and so forth until the desired diameter is reached. Many different types are in the market, but most are steel and require sharpening and maintenance. The most desired Drawplates are made with Tungsten Carbide. The remain sharp which allows the drawing process to be much more enjoyable and easier to use. I have a limited number of these available for sale in my Proxxon Tools Discount Store for anyone needing such an item. I am selling this item through my Proxxon Store as this site is not set up for conducting sales. To proceed to the store, please click the Button below.

DOMANOFF'S WORKSHOP
Domanoff's Workshop is one of the more innovative tool manufacturer's I have found for specialized Model Shipwright's tools. Alexey Domanaoff is a very special friend in Minsk, Belarus. I have known Alexey for about a year and many of my colleagues use his tools exclusively. I highly reccomend his products and I am honored to represent him on this site. You may contact him directly through the links on this page and from my Ship's Store page. Alexey is of the highest integrity and your purchases will arrive in about two weeks from from date of order w/mail tracking from Belarus to any place on earth. Alexey's main products are a Serving Machine, and several variations of a miniature "Rope Walk". I have the Serving Machine 2.0, which is the non motorized version and hope to get the Planetary Rope Walk 2.5 in the future. Version 2.5 consists of the upgrade option that electrifies it. The Planetary Rope Walk 2.5, and the Prosak Rope Walk 2.0 are the versions for the Rope Walk which will be featured here.

SERVING MACHINE 2.0
SERVING is encircling a rope with line or spun yarn to keep it from rubbing and chafing. To SERVE is to wind round spun yarn by means of a mallet, to prevent it from being rubbed. The materials used for the purpose are called service. Used for the standing rigging on most sailing ships, in particular with blocks, forestays and backsays. The shroud lines and rat lines are another area where serving and siezing are used. Details of this will be in Build Log Part II.
PLANETARY ROPE WALK 2.5
A Ropewalk is intended for making professional looking scaled three-stranded ropes and cables, right/left laid, for your ship model. This is essentially the same way rope was made in the days of wooden ships, only the workers actually walked the rope out of the huge machines. There is one at the Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Ct. where the Morgan is moored as a museum.

The blocks and lines being such an important focal feature of any model ship should be the best you can find, and this is where to find them. I have replaced all of my blocks and have completely replaced the lines. To make a superior model I highly recommend switching to these miniature ropes and blocks. No disappointments here.

BLOCK BUSTER by Model Shipways
The Blockbuster is an inexpensive ($4-$10) sanding device for rounding the edges of cheaper or imported rough cut Nautical blocks used in rigging model ships. Many are extremely rough laser cut blocks that are mediocre at best and smoothing the edges helps improve their appearance. Even though I have replaced all the blocks that came with the kit with Syrene Ship Model Co.'s blocks I still have this tool to use with other items in the model and I have some Specialty Blocks from Syrene that will need cleanup sanding. It takes some assembly and many people with the resources make their own as it is quite simple in design. I showed the assembly steps and components in case someone wants to build their own as it is simply a tumbler. To use it attach the mandrel to an electric drill, use a pretty high speed, hold the canister in one hand and push the drill against it to keep it tight, let run for a while and then check your progress stopping when you're happy with how they look. Check frequently so as not to over sand them - you don't want them to be only sawdust.
The parts are:
Spacer, 3/16" square plywood, 1 1/4" long
Mandrel, 3/16" plywood, 1 7/8" x 7/16" 4 are required
Paddles, 1/64" plywood, 1 7/8" x 1/13/16" 4 are required
Shaft, 3/16" diameter brass or aluminum rod, 1 3/4" long
Canister & Lid
Sandpaper, P100 Medium grit
